Do you need a rental car in Curaçao? #

Our recommendation: rent a car when you want to choose your own mainland beaches, change the order of your stops and leave when you are ready. For a stay focused on one resort or central Willemstad, compare the cost of a few arranged transfers first.

A cruise stop needs a different calculation: collection, refuelling and vehicle return all use time ashore. Read our cruise-port beach guide. Travelling without a car? Start with the ABC bus guide. Klein Curaçao is a separate boat outing.

Compare local rental companies on Island Wheels #

Island Wheels is a platform for comparing and booking cars, SUVs and vans from local rental companies in Curaçao. Use it to shortlist vehicles for your dates, then compare the actual supplier, included services and rental conditions. A marketplace listing is the start of the comparison; the booking confirmation and rental agreement are what you should keep.

Search rental cars on Island Wheels ↗

Look for the named company supplying the vehicle, who takes payment, who handles changes or refunds and whom you call if the car has a problem. Cura To Go helps you plan the outing; it does not supply the rental car or manage the booking.

Licence, age and documents: establish eligibility first #

A valid driving licence is required to drive in Curaçao. Rental companies set their own age and driving-experience conditions, so there is no single rental-age rule you can apply to every listing. Source: Curaçao Tourist Board — driving licence requirements.

Before paying, send the supplier your driver’s age and licence-issuing country and ask which original documents to bring. Include every additional driver. As a specific example, Fox’s Curaçao policy requires international renters to present a passport and a valid national licence, and requires an international driving permit for a non-Latin-alphabet licence. Apply the policy of your chosen supplier: Fox Curaçao rental conditions.

Compare the total price and the money needed at pickup #

Ask for one written total covering the exact pickup and return times. Keep the rental charge separate from any refundable security deposit or card hold.

  • Rental days, taxes, airport or delivery charges and after-hours fees.
  • Additional drivers, child seats and selected cover.
  • Mileage allowance, fuel policy and late-return charges.
  • Currency charged, accepted payment method and cardholder-name requirements.
  • Deposit amount, available card limit needed and release process.
  • Cancellation deadline, no-show terms and refund recipient.

Excess and exclusionsYour responsibility for covered damage and what falls outside the cover.

A deposit and an insurance excess are different questions. Ask about both; do not use the deposit amount as a shortcut for understanding your liability.

Payment rules differ. BlueHaven publishes rentals without a deposit or credit-card requirement; Enterprise’s local FAQ lists a credit card in the renter’s name among its usual requirements. Neither policy applies to every company. Sources: BlueHaven FAQ and Enterprise Curaçao FAQ.

Insurance: ask what you can still be charged #

Do not choose cover from an “all-risk” or “full insurance” label alone. Ask for the actual terms and the amount you remain responsible for after a covered incident.

Third-party liability
Deals with covered claims involving other people or their property; it is not the same as protection for damage to your rental.
Damage waiver and excess
Ask which damage is covered, the excess or deductible, and whether it applies per incident.
Exclusions
Ask specifically about tyres, glass, underbody, keys, theft, unattended belongings, unauthorised drivers and prohibited roads.

Fox’s published Curaçao policy distinguishes third-party cover from its loss-damage waiver and states that exclusions apply. Read the insurance section of the supplier policy. If you intend to rely on a card or separate policy, obtain written confirmation of its scope, requirements and claim process before declining the supplier’s offered cover.

Choose a car for people, luggage and the itinerary #

Count passengers with their luggage, not just seats. Check transmission, working air conditioning, boot space, child-seat availability and accessibility needs. Ask whether you are reserving a specific vehicle or a category: Enterprise explicitly describes category bookings, with the exact model subject to availability. Vehicle categories and equipment.

For a family, ask for the correct child-seat type and fitting arrangements before arrival. A larger SUV does not automatically give permission to drive off-road. Use the beach directory to choose your destinations before deciding what vehicle you need.

Airport, hotel or cruise pickup: agree the exact handover #

“Airport pickup” can mean a counter, a shuttle or a meeting outside arrivals. Get the meeting point, flight-delay procedure, opening hours, contact number and any transfer charge in writing. Enterprise’s airport page gives branch-specific arrival and rental instructions; other suppliers have different arrangements. Enterprise airport branch information.

For hotel delivery, agree where the inspection will take place and who can sign. For a cruise collection, use the actual terminal name and set a return deadline that protects the ship’s all-aboard time. Save the instructions before travelling.

At pickup: photograph and test before driving away #

Our handover checklist:

  1. Match the car, number plate, rental dates and authorised drivers to the agreement.
  2. Walk around with the representative. Photograph each side, bumpers, wheels, glass and existing marks; include the interior.
  3. Have damage entered on the signed condition report and keep your copy.
  4. Photograph the fuel level and odometer. Test lights, indicators, wipers and air conditioning; raise warning lights or visible tyre damage before accepting the car.
  5. Locate the supplied tyre or repair equipment and ask how to get assistance.
  6. Save the supplier’s contact, incident procedure and return instructions.

A video helps document the handover, but it should accompany the written condition report.

Driving to beaches: follow the contract and the actual entrance #

Traffic in Curaçao drives on the right. Source: Enterprise Curaçao driving information.

Use signed roads and the beach’s entrance or parking instructions. Ask the supplier about any unpaved approach you intend to use; a navigable line on a map is not rental permission. Keep valuables out of an unattended car and avoid leaving bags visible. Read the access notes for Cas Abao, Porto Mari or your chosen beach before departure.

In the Cura To Go planner, set your starting point, arrange the stops and choose visit durations. Include the return journey when needed. Driving estimates do not include live traffic, parking or the final walk to the water.

Breakdown or accident: know the procedure in advance #

At collection, ask the supplier to write down the local incident-reporting number, its own assistance contact and the steps required by the cover you selected. Save them offline. Ask how a replacement vehicle is handled and whether breakdown assistance covers your planned destinations.

If something happens, prioritise immediate safety and contact the relevant emergency service when needed. Follow the supplier’s reporting procedure promptly, record the location and retain photographs and reference numbers. Do not arrange non-urgent repairs on the supplier’s behalf without authorisation.

Return checklist: close the rental properly #

  1. Return to the agreed place and time with the agreed fuel level.
  2. Keep the refuelling receipt and photograph the fuel gauge, odometer and vehicle condition.
  3. Remove your belongings, charging cables and any paired phone or navigation history.
  4. Request a return-condition record and an itemised final receipt.
  5. Keep the deposit-release confirmation and ask how to query any later charge.

If returning outside staffed hours, get the key-drop and inspection procedure beforehand, including when your responsibility for the car ends. Allow time for refuelling and the transfer to your flight or ship.

Copy these questions into your rental enquiry #

We need a car from [date/time] to [date/time] for [adults/children] and [luggage]. Drivers are [ages], with licences from [country], held for [years].

Please confirm the full price and currency, payment and deposit rules, insurance excess and exclusions, authorised drivers, mileage, fuel policy, cancellation terms, exact pickup/return arrangements and any after-hours charges. Are our planned beach access roads permitted? Which child seat is available, and what is the breakdown or accident procedure?

Once transport is settled, choose an editable beach-day example or build your own route. Keep one main beach and leave room to stay longer when you enjoy it.

Frequently asked questions #

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Curaçao?

It depends on the supplier. Some require a card in the renter’s name; others advertise no-credit-card rentals. Confirm the payment method and deposit conditions for your booking before paying.

Is insurance included in every rental price?

Do not assume the same cover is included in every offer. Compare the policy, excess and exclusions, not just the daily rate.

Where can I compare local car rentals?

Island Wheels lists cars, SUVs and vans from local Curaçao rental companies. Compare the individual offers and supplier terms before booking.

Can Cura To Go plan my beach stops after I book?

Yes. Cura To Go lets you choose beaches, arrange their order, set a starting point and visit durations, share the plan and open driving directions in Google Maps. Car reservations remain with the rental provider.
